Phonetics

Phonetics

Phonetics is the study of human speech sounds, focusing on how they are produced, transmitted, and perceived. It explores individual sounds (phonemes) and the physical aspects of speaking and listening.

English Phonetics Chart

The English Phonetics Chart displays the phonetic symbols for sounds in English, often using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). It includes:

  • Consonants: Sounds produced with airflow restrictions, like /p/, /b/, and /s/.
  • Single Vowels/ Monopthongs: Open sounds without airflow restrictions, such as /a/ in cat or /i/ in see.
  • Double Vowels/ Diphthongs: Blended vowel sounds, like /aɪ/ in time.

The chart helps learners accurately pronounce English words by visualizing sound types and positions.

Role Models and the Importance of Having Them

Role Models and the Importance of Having Them

Role models are individuals, who inspire others by setting positive examples through their actions, achievements, or qualities. They play a crucial role in personal growth and motivation, often guiding people toward desirable behaviours, goals, and mindsets.

Importance of Having Role Models:

  1. Inspiration and Motivation: Role models provide a vision of success and show what is achievable, motivating others to set and pursue their own goals.
  2. Guidance for Personal Values and Ethics: They often embody values like integrity, resilience, and hard work, offering a blueprint for how to live purposefully and ethically.
  3. Building Self-Belief: Seeing someone else succeed, especially from similar backgrounds or circumstances, can strengthen one’s confidence and belief in their own potential.
  4. Providing Real-Life Lessons: Role models help people learn how to navigate challenges and adapt strategies in their personal and professional lives by observing real-life examples.
  5. Shaping Identity and Ambitions: They influence our identities by helping us understand who we want to be and shaping aspirations in meaningful directions.

Having role models can be transformative. They can show that dreams are possible and inspire people to strive for personal and professional excellence.

Personally, I have many role models (Yes, you heard me right, We can always have many role models, because so many people can help us understand about life, universe, our place in it., etc.). I was so fortunate to see, read, know and understand the life stories, the struggles, the agonies, the steps to overcome them, the success and the journey of many of my most favourite people whom I consider as my role models like, Dr. APJ. Abdul Kalam, Mother Teresa, Mega Star Chiranjeevi, Super Star Rajnikanth, Sachin Tendulkar, M.S.Dhoni, Virat Kohli, My teachers: Afred, Sangeetha, and many more.

I would like to tell about one of my roll models to you.

My Roll Model:

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is my role model because of his inspiring journey from a humble background to becoming one of India’s most respected scientists and its beloved President. Known as the 'Missile Man of India,' his dedication to science and technology helped advance India’s defence capabilities and space program. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Kalam’s humility, integrity, and dedication to education have left a lasting impact. He always encouraged young people to dream big, work hard, and serve the nation, which motivates me to strive for excellence and contribute positively to society, just as he did.

I had the privilege of seeing him closely and listening to him in awe, when he came to our college, Loyola College, Chennai in 2012, during my B.A English Literature days there. He spoke so softly, with so simple language, in an inspiring tone and words, like he always did. If I am a teacher today, I owe that to him, as I want to motivate people to dream and work towards achieving those dreams, like he did tell us that day. Love you, India's pride, Bharat Ratna, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam garu 💗.

PPT Topics for Students

A PowerPoint (PPT) presentation is a visual tool used to convey information through slides, combining text, images, charts, and multimedia elements. It helps presenters organize and share key points in a structured, engaging way, making complex information easier for audiences to understand and retain. Commonly used in educational, business, and professional settings, PPT presentations enhance communication by visually supporting the speaker’s message.

Here are some tips for an effective PowerPoint presentation:

  1. Keep Slides Simple: Use minimal text, bullet points, and avoid clutter.
  2. Engage with Visuals: Include images, charts, and infographics to illustrate points.
  3. Consistent Design: Stick to a cohesive colour scheme and font style.
  4. Practice Timing: Keep slides moving at a steady pace without rushing.
  5. Focus on Key Points: Highlight only the most important information per slide.
  6. Use Animations Sparingly: Only apply animations if they enhance understanding.
  7. Engage Your Audience: Ask questions and make eye contact.
  8. End with a Strong Conclusion: Summarize the main points and leave a memorable takeaway.

These practices help keep your presentation clear, engaging, and impactful.

This activity tests the students on various levels such as - their preparation, the content of the topic given/ chosen, arrangement and delivery of the content logically, relatability with the audience, grammar, vocabulary, the loudness of the voice and the voice modulation, non-verbal communication like facial expressions, head nods, eye-contact, hand gestures and the standing postures, proper examples, usage of famous quotes/ phrases/ sayings, and the time management.

Some of the important points students need to keep in mind to give an effective PPT Presentation:

  • Gather enough content from various sources like books, the internet, magazines, and newspapers, or by talking to experts/ people about their opinion on a topic.

  • Write down/ jot down some important points/ numbers/ years/ facts etc. (Because you can't simply tell some random things on a public platform, so be very clear with the facts/ history.)

  • Prepare well and practice (possibly in front of a life-size mirror or in front of your friends/ family/ peers/ classmates) before going to the stage. (Preparation can boost your confidence levels and you will not have stage fear/ fear of the public/ crowd)

  • Learn to talk without any notes in your hands. (It is possible only when you practice well)

  • Go confidently to the stage and just focus on the topic and the points you have to deliver. Do not be bothered or disturbed by the people in front of you.

  • Be serious enough and do not smile or laugh.

  • Maintain eye contact with the audience so that they feel involved in your talk. Do not look at the floor, chairs, lights, roof etc.

  • Start with a question which will grab the attention of your audience into thinking and actively participating and answering your question.

  • Start with a quote/ saying/ a short story that is relevant to your topic.

  • Tell it like a story and don't bore your audiences. You must learn the art of storytelling to convince your audience to your point of view on the topic.
