Information can be generally defined as knowledge that we obtain from study, experience, experiment, investigation, observance, instruction etc. There is so much information available in this world in verbal forms and non-verbal forms, graphs, symbols, paragraphs, diagrams, maps, pictures, videos etc. For example, Traffic Signals with Red, Yellow and Green lights, is an information transferred for people to follow road rules.

There are so many ways that this information can be transferred from Non-Verbal to Verbal and Verbal to Non-Verbal.

Information Transfer is a very effective writing skill. 

It involves the process of presenting graphical information into writing (Non-verbal to Verbal) or verbal information into pictorial representations (Verbal to Non-verbal).

Information Transfer is useful for:

  • Quick view of a large amount of data

  • Finding information easily

  • Effective summarization

  • Making comparisons easily


Various kinds of graphical presentations used to provide information:


  • Line graph 

  • Bar graph

  • Pie chart

  • Tables

  • Flow diagrams

  • Tree diagrams

  • Pictograms

  • Maps and plans

* Line graph    – to show variations in data

* Bar graph    - for comparison

* Pie chart - for effective division

* Tables - to arrange data logically, chronologically

* Flow diagrams - to represent a process

* Tree diagrams - to show the structure of an organization/ set-up

* Pictograms   - to depicts information in pictures

* Maps and plans    - to show boundaries and outlines.
