Gender-Based Reviews of Films
Gender-Based Reviews of Films
Gender-based reviews of films analyze movies through the lens of gender dynamics, representation, and portrayals, focusing on how characters, narratives, and settings reflect or challenge gender norms. These reviews often explore how women, men, and non-binary characters are depicted and examine whether their roles reinforce or subvert traditional gender stereotypes. Additionally, they may critique the diversity and complexity of characters, scrutinizing issues such as tokenism, the presence of the "male gaze," and the representation of LGBTQ+ identities.
Such reviews are essential in understanding media influence on societal perceptions of gender, as films contribute significantly to shaping cultural narratives around gender roles and expectations. For instance, the Bechdel Test—whether a film includes at least two named women who talk to each other about something other than a man—has become a popular metric for assessing female representation, sparking broader conversations on inclusion and equity in the film industry.
Gender-Based Review of Gladiator
Film Name: Gladiator (English)
Release Year: 2000
Director: Ridley Scott.
Major Actors: Russell Crowe as Maximus, Joaquin Phoenix as the antagonistic Emperor Commodus, and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Commodus’s sister and Giannina Facio, as the wife.
When I watch Gladiator from a gender-based perspective, I’m struck by how it centers on a hyper-masculine portrayal of heroism and vengeance. Maximus embodies classic ideals of masculinity: he’s a fierce warrior, loyal to his emperor, and deeply attached to his family, whose memory drives his quest for revenge. These elements make his character powerful but also highlight the narrow lens through which masculinity is often depicted in epic films.
On the other hand, the female characters, especially Lucilla, seem constrained by the film’s structure. While she’s depicted as intelligent and politically savvy, she’s mostly defined in relation to the male figures around her—her brother, Commodus, and her unfulfilled relationship with Maximus. Lucilla’s role underscores a familiar narrative choice in historical films, where women appear as supporters or moral compasses for male protagonists rather than as autonomous agents with their own stories.
Watching Gladiator through this lens, I feel that while it excels as a gripping tale of heroism and sacrifice, it misses the opportunity to broaden its scope on gender representation. Its world is one where the emotional and moral weight of the story rests solely on the shoulders of men, and women are largely peripheral to the main action. This approach leaves me wishing for a more nuanced portrayal of both genders, where heroism and resilience could be explored through more diverse perspectives.
Title: Gender-based Review of the Film 'Kalki 2898 AD'
ReplyDeleteFilm Name & Language: Kalki 2898 AD, Hindi/Telugu (Multilingual)
Year of Release: 2024
Director: Nag Ashwin
Major Actors: Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan
I have conflicted views on gender roles in this movie. Starting with the positive aspects, here the female lead 'Deepika Padukone', was not just potrayed as a mere romatic interest for the male lead but the main character around whom the entire plot revolves. Her character is not confined to stereotypical feminine traits but is shown as an individual, capable of making complex decisions and taking risks.
Now coming to the negative aspects, a form of discrimination I found was that women in that dystopian society are judged solely based on their ability to bear a child. Fertile women are experimented on and tossed into a fiery pit when they are no longer considered useful. There's so much more to a woman's identity than being just a baby-making machine.

Gender-based review of the Film: Arundhati
ReplyDeleteLanguage: Telugu
Year of release: 2009
Director: Kodi Ramakrishna
Major actors: Anushka Shetty, Sonu Sood
The film portrays Arundhati as a symbol of courage, intelligence, and resilience. Despite being faced with terrifying supernatural forces, she stands as a protector of her people and heritage. Her character breaks away from the conventional portrayal of women as secondary or vulnerable, instead embodying strength, wisdom, and an unyielding sense of responsibility.
Anushka’s performance brings depth and authenticity to Arundhati’s character, portraying a heroine who’s both emotionally grounded and physically formidable. This role redefined female power in Telugu cinema, demonstrating that a woman can command the screen and stand as the driving force in a genre typically dominated by male heroes. The film’s success sparked discussions about gender representation and set a new standard for female-led films in the industry.

I have watched KGF chapter 1 and 2 few years ago. Those 2 movies are really good. I liked them alot since I'm into action. And they even showed how great a women is and how a mother's love and care is. Even though they gave very little screen time, it's really great the way they portrayed mother character in changing son's life. There is a specific line"there is no great warrior than a mother in the whole world" and I liked it alot.

Title: Gender-based review of the Film Dil Dhadakne Do
ReplyDeleteFilm name & Language: Dil Dhadakne Do (Hindi)
Year of release: 2015
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Major actors: Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, Farhan Akhtar
Dil Dhadakne Do tells the story of a wealthy Indian family, the Mehras, and explores how men and women are treated differently. The film focuses on Ayesha (Priyanka Chopra), who has to put her family and business first, even though she wants to follow her own dreams. Her marriage is unhappy, showing how women are often expected to stay in situations for family or social reasons. Her brother Kabir (Ranveer Singh), on the other hand, has more freedom to do what he wants, showing the difference in expectations for men and women.
The character Neelam (Shefali Shah), Ayesha and Kabir’s mother, quietly tolerates a difficult marriage just to keep up appearances. Through these characters, director Zoya Akhtar shows how women often have to sacrifice their happiness for the family, while men enjoy more choices. The film makes us think about gender inequality and how these traditional expectations can be unfair, even in modern, wealthy families.

ReplyDeleteTitle: Gender-based Review of the Film Pink
Film Name & Language: Pink, Hindi
Year of Release: 2016
Director: Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury
Major Actors: Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang
Pink is one of the best movies for raising awareness about gender issues, especially around the topic of consent. The story revolves around three young women – Minal (Taapsee Pannu), Falak (Kirti Kulhari), and Andrea (Andrea Tariang) – who stand up against a group of men who harass them. When the women take action to defend themselves, they are blamed and judged by society instead. The movie's courtroom scenes are powerful, where Deepak Sehgal (Amitabh Bachchan), their lawyer, explains how important it is to respect a woman’s "No." His line, “No means No,” highlights the idea that a woman’s choice should be respected, no matter what.
A minor drawback is that the strongest arguments in the film come from the male lawyer, even though it’s the women’s story. However, Pink remains a must-watch for its strong message about respect, equality, and understanding consent in a simple and impactful way.

The movie Laapata ladies portrays how the women were treated and are also being treated now in many rural areas of our country. When I see in movie from a gender based perspective I astonished that how the women were treated low compared to men. In the movie the women were not allowed to educate , work outside and were restricted to house hold works.
I was amazed by the female lead characters in the movie where both the female characters gets swaped accidentally and try to live their own lives on their own.
I also liked the way how the director addressed the story with a neat and decent screenplay and at last demonstrating the power and will of an independent woman.

ReplyDeleteFilm name & Language: Pushpa: The Rise (Telugu)
Year of release: 2021
Director: Sukumar
Major actors: Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil
Review:
Pushpa showcases a gritty, male-dominated world where power and ambition drive the storyline. While Allu Arjun’s character, Pushpa, rises through a world of violence and control, female characters like Srivalli mostly serve as love interests rather than equals. The film reinforces traditional gender dynamics, highlighting how women are often portrayed within limited roles in male-centric action dramas. Despite Rashmika Mandanna’s presence, her character’s agency remains secondary, underscoring the film’s focus on male-driven narratives and societal norms that prioritize masculine power.

Through the journey of Geeta and Babita, “Dangal” movie online shatters the stereotypes that have long held women back. By showcasing their incredible strength, determination, and skill on the wrestling mat, the film challenges the notion that certain sports are meant only for men.
Traditionally feminine occupations include teaching and secretarial work, as well as caregiving professions like nannying and nursing. Today such stereotypes are being challenged greatly, with women advancing in almost one-third of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers

ReplyDelete"English Vinglish"
Year of Release: 2012

Review of English Vinglish:
In "English Vinglish," I found a powerful exploration of gender, particularly how women are often undervalued in their roles within the family and society. Sridevi's character, Shashi, embodies the struggles many women face—her lack of confidence for her inability to speak English. The narrative highlights the broader issue of how women's contributions are often overlooked, and it reflects the societal pressures
The film also beautifully showcases Shashi's journey of self-discovery and empowerment. As she enrolls in an English class, I was inspired by her transformation from a timid housewife to a confident individual who learns to assert her identity. This growth not only challenges the stereotypes surrounding women but also emphasizes the importance of education and self-worth. Ultimately, "English Vinglish" is a heartwarming reminder that every woman deserves respect and recognition, regardless of her linguistic abilities or societal expectations.

This movie portrays friendship, family relations and success in corporate industry.Pooja hedges character is often limited to as Heros love interest and shown that she had her own goals and career and had to sacrifice her love life for it.Her role just involves supporting hero but nothing regarding her upgrowth in career is shown and often her job is portrayed with some funnier and unwilling aspects.I feel there should be more moments given to Pooja hedge portraying her succes and growth.
One thing I don't like about Pooja character Potrayal is: she is shown as a girl who stays friends with the boys who studies and I didn't like that .
While Rishi is praised for his ambition and success, I feel Pooja's character is not given any attention for her own career. Instead, her story mainly revolves around Rishi. I think this potrays women's roles are less important than men's.
While the focus on male success is inspiring, it can dominate what female characters contribute. I also feel this might potray the idea that men can only bring change compared to women

Director: Sharan Sharma
Major actors: Janhvi Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Angad Bedi
"Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl" is an inspiring biopic that highlights the challenges faced by women in a male-dominated field, specifically in the Indian Air Force. The film tells the story of Gunjan Saxena, the first female pilot to fly in combat during the Kargil War, and it effectively explores themes of gender discrimination, ambition, and resilience. Through Gunjan's journey, the film sheds light on the societal expectations placed on women and the hurdles they must overcome to pursue their dreams.
The portrayal of Gunjan's character is both empowering and relatable, as she navigates her aspirations against the backdrop of a conservative environment that often underestimates women's capabilities. The film also emphasizes the importance of family support, particularly through the character of her father, who encourages her ambition and stands against societal norms. By showcasing Gunjan's determination and courage, the film serves as a powerful message about breaking gender stereotypes and encourages women to pursue their goals, regardless of societal barriers. Overall, "Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl" is a poignant narrative that not only celebrates female empowerment but also inspires conversations about gender equality in various fields.

In order to secure a job, Mary has pretend to be married, but instead of the typical husband-boss-wife dynamic, she and her "husband" wind up becoming partners. Her persona is fascinating to see since she is bold, shrewd, and defends herself. In addition to being humorous, the film demonstrates that girls are just as powerful and capable as boys. Missamma offers a powerful message about treating boys and girls equally, despite the fact that it was created a long time ago. It's a pleasant film that teaches you the value of being authentic while also offering some amusement.

She goes to the pilot training in Mumbai where she was continuously taunted and doubted by Govind with which she couldn't bare with him anymore and wanted to focus only on her dream. Govind as a revenge has done an acid attack over Pallavi when she came back to hometown. All the world has become zero to her as acid affected her eyes badly and she cannot be a pilot anymore. She was completely depressed and was fed up with herself. Even the court rejected the complaint against Govind as there were not much proofs.
She later was motivated by Vishal who makes her impossible pilot dream to a possible Airhostress after which she was quite satisfied even though it took her lot of time to get back from the trauma and come back to normal life.
Why should the women always face all this. Why do they always have to be on the receiving end of the crime she is subjected to. They have their own life, career and freedom and nobody should even dare to touch that. I truely wish such horrific incidents over women should be changed and implemented by our society in the near future to see our women happy so that we stay happy.

Pushpa is an action movie about a man named Pushpa who works his way up in a tough, dangerous world. The movie is mostly about him, while the women characters, like Srivalli, don’t get as much to do. Although there are multiple scenes which shows that the hero respects and protects women it seemed like the heroin didn’t play a part in the hero’s life.

The movie Dangal is based on true story about a father trains his two daughters to achieve the world class wrestlers.
This is a movie which inspires the society to believe in dreaming big and that constant efforts and hard work never goes in waste that not only the boys can do even the girls also.
When I watched this movie i realised that not only it's competition of boys but girls also they believe in hardwork even they are teased by their friends and society they didn't care about what people say and they set up their strategies and plans to reach their goals.
When they are unable to focus their father inspires and learnt them how to win and they live like boys like haircut stuff etc and lastly they achieved their and their father's dream.

Moana is a film that essentially portrays the skills and power of women in a spectacular essence. Moana, the main protagonist of the story, is the daughter of a village chief. She tries to keep his village safe and happy in all conditions irrespective of the situations. Moana has an intense connection with the ocean and hence dreams of going beyond the reef to which her father always denies. When the resources of the island begin to deplete , she discovers the reason to be the curse of Maui, who stole the heart of the goddess Te Fiti.
In my point of view, Moana is shown as a powerful woman , who went beyond her comfort zone to protect her village at any cost. She did not give up even when she was alone . Her determination to save her people serves as a role model for everyone. She broke the barriers of stereotypes by leading the village and empowering women to fish , pursue their interests .

Dil Dhadakne Do is a movie that revolves around gender inequalities. The female lead of the movie Ayesha(Priyanka Chopra) is expected to prioritize her family and business while no one cares about her dreams except her long-lost love, who becomes voice of Ayesha. Ayesha's parents and in-laws expect her to be modest and aren't supportive. On the other hand Kabir(Ranveer) is a free bird, who can do anything he wishes to.
Even Ayesha's and Kabir's mom has adjusted in an unhappy marriage. Later in the film everything changes where the women demand for their rights. Zoya Akhtar shows that how women in marriages and households are expected to sacrifice their happiness under the name of prestige. Whereas men are allowed to do things of their choice.

This movie is a real-life story of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan who is known for the heroic efforts done in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
In this movie majority of the scenes show how soldiers are trained and the different sacrifices they make for the nation. In this they also show about the love life of the hero which starts from his young days. I feel there was proper gender equality in this movie as it showed all the real life troubles the family of a soldier faces.
I feel every soldier not able to give proper time to their personal life which includes their love life. The spouses of all the soldiers make a lot of sacrifices by staying away from them. Despite highlighting Sandeep’s achievements, the director didn’t miss a chance to highlight Sandeep’s wife’s career achievements which is how it should be.
I felt this the above-mentioned details were well shown in the movie.

I watched thappad movie back in 2020. I particularly feel that the movie mainly focuses on gender inequality and domestic violence. In the movie, Taapsee Pannu decides to file for divorce after her husband slaps her at a party. Hence, I feel that this single act of violence tells us how society normalises gender inequality and domestic abuse.

A Gendered Reading of Thappad
ReplyDeleteFilm Name: Thappad
Year of Release: 2020
Director: Anubhav Sinha
More than just a woman's plight, Thappad is an exploration of domestic violence and the societal space it occupies. The film revolves around Amrita who is reluctantly pushed to file for divorce when her husband Vikram slaps her.
Though this act seems trivial, it forces us to consider the way society normalizes violence against women.
Amrita's divorce is an act of defiance and defies the stereotype that most women are supposed to simply 'take it. It is clear from the storyline too, how women are pejoratively told that the violence 'is not that bad'. Amrita's story in the context of her surrounding characters like domestic help Sunita and a frustrated lawyer shows the multiplicity of how women get affected by patriarchal structures across classes.
Taapsee Pannu does well as Amrita and narrates the extremities and violence in Amrita convincingly. Supporting characters like Ratna Pathak Shah offer more complexity to the family set up and contributes to the main storyline.
In the end, Thappad urges the viewer, mostly men, to introspect and see the uncomfortable realities regarding patriarchy and violence and fight for women to have a larger agency instead of trying to fit them within tight social expectations and aggression shouldn’t be tolerated.

In the movie Raayan the male lead actor Dhanush is shown for his portrayal of the protagonist,
Raayan, is emblematic of hyper-masculinity where as the female characters, especially Aishwarya Lekshmi’s role, introduce emotional depth but remain somewhat peripheral to the central narrative.
It explores themes of power and control ,but it tends to align power with male characters, leaving women in roles that are dependent on the protagonist’s journey it does not significantly challenge patriarchal structures or stereotypes, instead adhering to the familiar narrative of the male anti-hero’s rise and redemption.
Raayan succeeds as an intense action thriller but leaves room for improvement in gender representation. The film touches on themes of emotional vulnerability and redemption, suggesting the need for balanced gender dynamics, but ultimately places men at the story’s center.

Director : Shimit Amin
Major Actor : Shah Rukh Khan as Kabir Khan
"Chak De! India' is a compelling story which discusses gender sensitization through sports. It follows disgraced ex-men's hockey player turned women team coach, Kabir Khan. The film highlights the daily struggles of women living in a male dominated world and their own aspirations are pushed to one side because society expects them to take on traditional roles.
As the women from different cultural backgrounds come together, they face opposition not only from society but also from their own families, who question their choice of pursuing sports as a career. The film highlights how gender stereotypes label women as physically weaker and less capable, with the players often mocked and dismissed by male counterparts, officials, and society at large.
Through Kabir Khan’s strict discipline and belief in their potential, the women challenge these biases. They learn to stand up against sexism, whether it’s fighting for respect on the field or confronting gender-based discrimination. The team's eventual victory proves that women, when given equal opportunity and respect, can excel and bring pride to the nation.

I watched the film “Dear Comrade” in 2019. The movie revolves around the concept of a girl’s(Lily) story trying to become a cricketer. Coming from a middle class family, respect in the society was very important for her parents which led to the ignorance of the bad against her. But the main lead(Bobby) stood with her and helped her come out of the depression. She, who was initially afraid of standing for justice, came out and spoke for justice. This movie fosters a keyword “Comrade” which means a person standing for us till the very end in our journey. The main lead was depicted as a comrade in Lily's life. I feel every woman in society should have a comrade in her life who will support and stand for her.
After watching this movie, I felt that no woman(no one) should forgive the bad happening against them. Even if they are unable to stand for their justice,a Comrade(for eg. Bobby in the movie) should stand for them.

ReplyDeleteFilm name and Language: Osey Ramulamma, Telugu
Year of access: 1997
Director: A.K. Reddy
Main actors: Vijayshanti, Rao Gopal Rao, Prakash Raj
Osey Ramulamma is seen as one of the key films which has defined the temper of a Telugu cinema. More particularly, when it’s filming women’s struggles against male subordination in the moving picture. Ramulamma, the heroine casted by Vijayshanti in the movie Osey Ramulamma, is a fierce and strong woman who emerges assimilated as an aggressor and a victim in a patriarchal and gender based violence culture. Yet, it is in the 90s cinema, women were natural and passive angels who were conquered and assisted their men and who were only cows for noise in their circles, in particularly Ramulamma whom even in this film depicts active woman who goes out of her way to seek justice. Other variations are also interesting as they deal with the notion of the experience of woman s agency on the example of a woman who manages to shatter whatever constraints the conditions try to impose on her.
The film deals with broader issues as it not only shows the struggles that women go through in society but also inspires women to rise above the societal limitations. The film also champions the cause of men and women sitting in equal right.

I find "Dil Dhadakne Do" to be a thought-provoking film that delves into the complexities of gender roles and societal expectations. The film follows the lives of the Mehra family, a wealthy Indian family on a cruise vacation. I was particularly struck by the stark contrast between the expectations placed on Ayesha, the intelligent and ambitious daughter, and her brother, Kabir. While Kabir is free to pursue his desires without judgment, Ayesha is expected to prioritize her family's needs and societal norms. This unfair treatment of women is a recurring theme throughout the film.
"Dil Dhadakne Do" not only exposes the unfairness of these double standards but also inspires me to challenge traditional norms and advocate for gender equality. Through its captivating characters and thought-provoking storyline, the film encourages me to reflect on the societal pressures that limit individuals, particularly women, and to strive for a more equitable future.

The movie centers on a woman who stands up for herself after her husband slaps her, choosing to question the boundaries of what is acceptable in a marriage. I see how the movie sheds light on issues like the silent sacrifices women make and the struggles they face when asserting their rights. Thappad shows how important it is for women to be treated with dignity and equality, and it questions the idea that love and respect mean enduring mistreatment. It made me think deeply about the need for change in how society views women’s roles, especially in marriage, and the importance of speaking out against injustice.

When I first watched "Thappad," I was struck by its deeply affecting exploration of domestic relationships and the societal norms that often go unchallenged. This film shows an often-ignored issue of emotional and physical abuse within marriage, delivered through the powerful story of Amrita, played by Taapsee.
I was particularly moved by her emotional evolution throughout the film, as she transitions from a woman who seeks to uphold her marriage to one who demands her right to be treated with respect.

Gender-Based Review of the Film: Rudhramadevi
ReplyDeleteLanguage: Telugu
Year of Release: 2015
Director: Gunasekhar
Major Actors: Anushka Shetty, Allu Arjun, Rana Daggubati
The moment I laid my eyes on 'Rudhramadevi', I was very fascinated with how the movie showcased a character that existed in history and went beyond the normative gender expectations. With a storyline centered on Rudhramadevi, a warrior queen of the Kakatiya dynasty, the movie depicts a fierce woman in a leadership position. Anushka Shetty's performance captivated me; she gives life to a character who possesses great fighting prowess and ultimate fragility of leadership. It was interesting to watch a story where a female does not play a supplementary role but rather takes centre stage of the storyline and the history with emphasis of women’s factors being ignored.
The narration style enables one to walk with Rudhramadevi in her quest for success as well as her down moments. I was impressed on how the film was able to account for her masculinity as a women head of the family and the adversity she faced in commanding dignity and validation. With limitations for narration I think, 'Rudhramadevi' initiated very promising debates regarding the suffocated depiction of women within the frame and changed the standard for images of the dominant figures in hegemonic stories in most Indian historical dramas. All in all, however, I found the film cut across stereotypes and break a new ground in terms of understanding and appreciating the place of women in history and the cinema.

Gender-based review of the film 'varudu kaavalenu'
ReplyDeleteFilm name & language:
Year of release: 2021
Director:Lakshmi Sowjanya
Major actors: Ritu Varma, Naga Shourya.
This film is generalized to our day-to-day lives from the perspective of a girl's life. This movie is directed by Lakshmi Sowjanya, and the main leads in this movie are Ritu Varma and Naga Shourya. This movie shows a confident, independent woman who manages her own businessand leads a life of self-assurance. In this movie, she's shown as career-focused and relatively pressured to marry, but her past doesn't go well accordingly, so despite being convinced to marry, she feels that there could be another disappointment of trust.
Over all, Varudu Kaavalenu is charming with lighthearted humor and notable chemistry between leads. But as a gender commentary, it's totally worth nothing how the film often reinforces conventional romantic despite its attempt at portraying a strong, independent woman. The narrative, while enjoyable, could have explored Ritu Varma's individuality and journey without necessarily tethering it to romance as her ultimate accomplishment.

I have watched the movie " Bahubali :The conclusion" where I like the character of Anushka Shetty as Devasena . Her character is portrayed as a fearless warrior princess who was strong, independent and also was skillful compared to other men. She used to stick to her word and respected her people and helped them during crisis. She respected her husband and never was dependent on anyone even after marriage. She stood against all the problems and was strong for several years despite of being locked in an open jail bearing all seasonal changes. This mind set of her's which I liked can set an example to others which is to always believe in positivity and stay strong.

SWAG is a perfect gender based movie in recent times where it shows Gender Equality is a necessity for present society where transgenders are not given any respect
Once the film reaches its interval mark and all the principal characters and their interlinks are in place, the goal becomes evident, as does the filmmaker’s intentions of making a particular point about gender hierarchy and gender-based oppression
A very complex story is dealt with care and good performances by the leads made this movie a good one
The climax of this movie shows why every gender is equal and why everyone is equal and make the audience think
“People should see the behaviour not gender”-I am very impressed by this concept

I personally feel this is the best film in recent time.It is a fictional film, which revolves around the concept of how woman were treated in small villages of India. The woman at that time were forced to get married at very younger age and are restricted to work at home.
They were not allowed to study and achieve their dreams.
In this film,a woman cleverly tries to escape from this situation and what all odds she had faced and how did she overcome all of them is shown very clearly in the movie. The movie concept mainly highlights the woman was really good at studies, despite she was forced for the marriage by her family. But at the end she will be able to achieve her dream of pursuing higher studies and the screenplay was also too good. The movie highlights the unequal opportunities faced by the woman. There were no equal rights for woman as par with man. This movie was a clear winner in showing all this.

I personally feel the movie 'Pelli Choopulu' had showcased the femal lead Chitra(play by Ritu Varma) as a strong independent women who is solely focused on building her career.
In a generation where the parents always expect the women to settle down with marriage, she stands for herself, She firmly believes that women can succeed professionally and that marriage should not be a stop point for personal goals. I feel every person should be financially independent and do not have to rely on someone else even to take permission or money for small things, for that a stable job or career is more important than getting married to a well settled person. Job earns respect to you in the society.
I wish every women gets to fulfill their goals like chitra. In this society, the mindset like chitra is very much important to succeed in life and make a remarkable journey.
Moreover, the male lead Prashanth (play by Vijay Devarakonda) supports chitra to fullfill her dreams. This is how a progressive society should. Irrespective of the gender, they should be willing to support the opposite person to achieve their goals.

Major Actors: Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell
I watched the movie last year as it is the highest grossing film of the year earning over 1 billion dollars. This movie talks about the patriarchy and the effects of feminism. In the imaginary world of barbieland, the matriarchal females called barbies hold prestigious jobs like government, law, science, and so on, whereas the males, known as kens are treated as outcasts. When Barbie and Ken go to the real world, the roles are being reversed. The girl named Sasha, who is her owner, criticizes Barbie for encouraging unrealistic beauty standards. Ken gets to know the patriarchy of the real world and implements it in barbieland. Meanwhile, Barbie gets chased by the owner and the employees of the toy company Mattel, who wants her to remanufacture Barbie dolls. While coming back to barbieland, she realizes that the barbies were getting indoctrinated into submissive roles under the patriarchies of Kens. The barbies fight back and it comes back to normal.
Barbie and Ken make amends, acknowledging their past mistakes. When Ken bemoans his lack of purpose without Barbie, she encourages him to find an autonomous identity. Barbie, who remains unsure of her own identity, meets with the spirit of Ruth Handler, Mattel co-founder and creator of the Barbie doll, who explains that Barbie's story has no set ending and her ever-evolving history surpasses her roots. The thing about this movie that I personally feel is that although, it talks about feminism and masculinity, there should be no debate on what roles each gender should be assigned to. I personally say this that we need to question our beliefs and lifestyles the present world is living with like stereotypes. I know that for a society to change, it takes time, but once we start striving for a greater cause, then the world can be better and not cause any differences as showed in the film.

The second half in comparison gets better, as we get more clarity about the film’s core intentions. The comedy also does not work as much as it was intended to work,
SWAG, however, receives praise for its sensitive and mature portrayal of gender politics. Sree Vishnu will be seen in a whole new light after SWAG.

Year of Release: 2009
Director: Kodi Ramakrishna
Major actors: Anushka Shetty, Sonu Sood, Sayaji Shinde
As a male viewer, this film is different because it offers an alternative perspective of a woman being strong in a film that is centered around a male lead. I also perceive Arundhati, which features Anushka Shetty in the title role, as a re-invention of the horror and fantasy genre that usually hinges on the corners of a man, now a woman is placed at the center of the plot. She is not a weak figure who waits for salvation; her character is an embodiment of bravery as well as strength, who takes to arms against the forces of evil to defend her family and clan. Such a depiction contests on male and female identities and complexifies woman as well.
Additionally, the film does not only revolve around the idea of female pursuit and victory but digs deeper into the connotations of sacrifice and empowerment. Arundhati’s evolution in the course of the film is filled with much spirited struggle on both personal and social level that would reach out well to the females. It properly exposes how women in such a setting have to win for her win is not personal but encompasses all. By incorporating fantasy devices alongside the feminist angle, “Arundhati” is a true narrative that portrays hopes on the viewers, inspiring them to reconsider the conventional aspects of gender roles and respect for female strength in cinemas as well as in life.

I believe that "Raazi" is a movie that portrays the courage of a woman, in a challenging political environment. Alia Bhatt delivers a performance as Sehmat Khan who enters into a marriage with a military officer to work as an Indian spy. The movie effectively captures her conflicts as she balances her love for her family with her duty, towards her nation.
"I really like how 'Raazi' focuses on a woman, as the character in a spy tale.Seemats bravery and emotional growth strike a chord with people since they mirror the obstacles numerous women encounter in a male dominated society."
In my view,"Raazi"is not a spy movie but a touching delve, into the essence of self and the courage required to challenge societal expectations. It is helmed by Meghna Gulzar. Highlights womens stories and the determination of a woman, in a challenging environment.

It was inspiring to see a female character who not only deals with fear but also fights back against her circumstances even when her own people were against her. The film also included horror elements to highlight the real struggles women face in a patriarchal society which made the movie and her journey relatable. I like the film Mahanati because it tells the story of Savitri, an actress from South Indian cinema, in a very touching way. Keerthy Suresh done a great job acting as Savitri, showing her journey from a young actress to a huge star. The movie shows how she faced many struggles, both in her career and personal life, especially in an industry where men had more power.
The film also brings out themes related to gender, like how women often have to find strength to balance their work and family life despite social pressures. Through Savitri’s story, Mahanati reminds us of the importance of self-respect and courage. It’s a movie that really honors her legacy and inspires viewers to think about their own strengths.

In such a situation I would be very angry on the thought of how people can be so weak minded that they would abuse women. Due to an inappropriate case, several players, including the hero, lose their membership on the team. During this difficult time, the heroine becomes the sole breadwinner, while the hero waits for justice. Many players manage to rejoin the team by bribing their lawyer.
The son is proud of his father's past achievements in cricket, which motivates the hero to return to the sport and rejoin the team, with the help of his former coach, despite knowing he has a heart condition.
He plays for the team in the Ranji Trophy and leads them to victory with his outstanding performance, but ultimately, he dies.
In this film, I felt that the supportive nature of both the hero and heroine contributes to their success. They stand by each other through challenging times, showcasing a partnership that thrives on mutual support and resilience.

I see this film exposes relationships in the modern world, and especially in the context that can be examined from the gender lens. Since ‘F2’ is about a woman who gets married, there are often expectations concerning how the women and men will communicate in marriages which can easily lead to frustrations, and the film uses comedy to comedically explore those frustrations. Venkatesh and Varun Tej act as the husbands get into trouble trying to explain to their wives what they want, so Z Gentry could observationally study the differences between literal and figurative relationships. The play tends more towards traditional relationships, but with a twist.
Tamannaah and Mehreen Pirzada are not mere appendages of the film as they have their own aspirations. What women want and how women feel in terms of the romantic comedy genre is illustrated through woman’s emotions and attitudes about the artists. There are also more serious questions that this humor encodes about the necessity of women in family values and perspectives. All in all ‘F2’ isn’t just a comedy something; it rather comedies something, well one can say there is more respite attached in ‘F2’.

Title: Gender-based Review of the Film Dangal
ReplyDeleteFilm Name & Language:Dangal (Hindi)
Year of Release:2016
Director: Nitesh Tiwari
Major Actors: Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra
The movie Dangal (2016) depicts the gender struggle through the life of Geeta and Babita Phogat, who challenge the gender norms to emerge as wrestlers. Their father’s insistence on training them to wrestle against the convention of the country defying all norms to strengthen his daughters further captured my attention. We see both those gender stereotypes, in sports and our societies, and fight for respectively more empowered strong women characters that pursue their dreams. For me, Dangal has been one of the best concerning the emphasis it gives on women rights and that every woman must be given the chance and opportunity to work and succeed in whatever area they desire.

I find Dangal as an inspiring film and as it is based on the true story it also reminds me the importance of breaking the societal norms to achieve success. Director: Kiran Rao
Major actors: Nitanshi goel,Pratibha Ratna , Sparsh Shrivastava.
I have to say, Laapataa Ladies is a film that truly stands out. From the moment I started watching, I was captivated by its charm and depth. This movie is not just a film; it’s an experience that resonates on so many levels. It’s right up there with classics like Lagaan and, in my opinion, deserves an Oscar.
The pacing of the film is perfect. There isn’t a single moment where the narrative drags or feels forced. Instead, it keeps you engaged and invested in the characters’ journeys from start to finish. I found myself so engrossed that I didn’t want the movie to end.
The storytelling is nothing short of brilliant. Each character is meticulously developed, and their stories intertwine seamlessly, creating a rich tapestry of human emotions and relationships. The cast delivers exceptional performances, bringing authenticity and heart to their roles.
What makes Laapata Ladies truly special is its ability to highlight the beauty in everyday life. It portrays the struggles and triumphs of ordinary people with such grace and sensitivity. The direction is thoughtful, and the performances are nuanced, making it a film that stays with you long after the credits roll.

Title: Gender-based review of the Film 'DALAPATHI'
ReplyDeleteDALAPATHI & MALYALAM , TELUGU :
Year of release: 1991
Director: Mani Ratnam
Major actors: Rajinikanth and Mammootty with Arvind Swamy , Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana and Geetha.
I find it fascinating that “Dalapathi’s” primary plot focus revolves around men yet women are incredibly pivotal figures. In this movie Surya is influenced by Shobana who makes him more thoughtful and quiet, while Surya's mother Srividya contributes a more emotionally stabilizing element.
The both main leads of this movie always repect the female characters and they are always be with them while taking decisions too.Nevertheless, while these women do not have strong screen time, they add an essential balance to the story. Even in a strong man's world filled with many intense men, women are there, quietly but with purpose they play a critical role in molding their chacters . For those who appreciate a film that is equally emotional and powerful, “Dalapathi” is a movie which everyone should watch.

Title: Gendered Analysis of the Film Kausalya Krishnamurthy
ReplyDeleteName of the Film & Language: Kausalya Krishnamurthy (Telugu)
Date of Release: 2019
Director: Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao
Lead Actors: Karthik, Nithya Naresh, Ravi Prakash
I noticed Kausalya Krishnamurthy is a poignant film focused on Kausalya, a young woman who wishes to succeed as a farmer and in the process, examines gender relations in the rural Indian context. I appreciate how the film subverts gender tensions as Kausalya is portrayed as self-reliant and undeterred as she goes about chasing her ambitions in a male-dominated profession.
The depiction of her character emphasizes the need to empower women and the need for the society to sustain such an effort. Also, the film gives image of men’s character in the struggle for existence of gender, who mature in dialogue of cooperation and equality. All in all, Kausalya Krishnamurthy is a motivational depiction of what should be done in order to make the world gender balanced, hence making a valuable contribution to the Indian cinema in contemporary times.

TITLE: GENDER BASED REVIEW OF THE FILM ‘KALKI - 2898 A.D’
ReplyDeleteFILM NAME : KALKI 2898 A.D
LANGUAGE: TELUGU,HINDI
YEAR OF LANGUAGE: 2024
DIRECTOR : NAG ASHWIN
MAJOR ACTORS: PRABHAS,AMITABH BACHCHAN,KAMAL HAASAN,DEEPIKA PADUKONE.
REVIEW:
I watched this film many times as it has my favorite actors involved. And this film ‘KALKI - 2898 A.D’ directed by Nag Ashwin establishes a strong connection with ancient Indian mythology and also with a very high-tech background setting. In this movie,Prabhas plays a major role as main character, while Deepika Padukone plays a supporting role.Even though the movie is set in futuristic high-tech background. It often shows women in traditional roles, who are been supporting the men for reaching their goal that is to protect the world they are been living in where good is almost going to be extinct.
I like the character of Deepika in this movie,as she is seen as a strong and independent lady and she was given some kind of mythological elevation like all the people calling her as ‘Amma’ and giving her huge respect and lots of love, care, security. In this movie we can see how strong the women can be and it also often depicts how we can show men and women in different supporting roles and whether we should give them equal roles.

Language: Malayalam
Year of release: 2021
Director: Jeo Baby
Major actors: Nimisha Sajayan, Suraj Venjaramoodu
The Great Indian Kitchen effectively highlights the gender demands placed on women in traditional households. It revolves around a newlywed woman who gets caught in a daily routine of cooking, cleaning, and catering to her husband and in-laws, with no recognition for her efforts.
Through repeating sequences and minimal speech, the film clearly depicts the mental and physical strain of her life, immersing viewers in her silent frustration. Her eventual revolt is a powerful statement about self-respect and autonomy, opposing the established rule of women in patriarchal cultures.
By the end, The Great Indian Kitchen acts as a sharp complaint of society conventions, encouraging viewers to reconsider the importance of equality and respect in household settings.

Year of release: 2019
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Major actors: Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi
I recently watched "Gully Boy," and it left a strong impression in my mind. The film follows Murad, played by Ranveer Singh, who is an aspiring rapper from the slums of Mumbai and dreams of breaking free from his life’s circumstances. I was captivated by how he mustered the courage and confidence to follow his passion despite of facing many challenges . The way it portrayed the struggles of underprivileged families which was overpowered by passion and determination was impressive . Something that really stood out to me was the character development of Muraad all along the movie. His passion for rap and his determination to pursue his dreams despite societal pressures inspired me deeply.

ReplyDeleteFilm Name & Language: The colour Purple( English)

Director :Steven Spielberg
Major Actors: Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg Oprah,Winfrey.
"The Color Purple" is a movie that speaks about the effects of stereotyping genders and how badly African American women were harassed in the early 20th century in the United States' South. I feel this film tells the story of Celie, who underwent emotional pain and persecution by the societal norms and prejudice towards gender. Because it showed me the power of tenacity as a tool for self-realization and empowerment through interplay with other strong women characters who spur each other on.

Gender-based review of the film 'varudu kaavalenu'
ReplyDeleteFilm name & language:
Year of release: 2021
Director:Lakshmi Sowjanya
Major actors: Ritu Varma, Naga Shourya.
Varudu Kaavalenu really connects with everyday life, especially from the perspective of a young woman. Directed by Lakshmi Sowjanya, the movie stars Ritu Varma as a confident, independent woman who runs her own business and leads a self-assured life. She’s focused on her career, but she’s also under the typical pressure to marry. With her past relationships not going well, she’s naturally cautious about opening up again and fears more disappointment.
I found Varudu Kaavalenu to be a charming film with lighthearted humor and great chemistry between the leads. But as much as the movie tries to present a strong, independent woman, it still leans on conventional romantic tropes. While it’s an enjoyable watch, I feel it could have shown Ritu Varma’s journey and individuality more deeply, without making romance her ultimate accomplishment.

Shiddat is a Hindi romantic drama starring , i really liked the story & presention of characters the story revolves around Jaggi, a passionate young man who falls deeply in love with Kartika and is determined to overcome all obstacles to be with her, even when her commitment to him is uncertain. The film explores intense themes of love, sacrifice, and determination.
Jaggi’s Intense Passion and Idealization of Love: Jaggi, the male lead, is portrayed as a man driven by intense love and passion
Kartika’s Internal Conflict and Independence: Kartika, the female lead, is portrayed as a strong, independent woman who initially has a clear understanding of her life goals and ambitions. While she is attracted to Jaggi's passion, she prioritizes her commitment to her fiancĂ© and her planned future, reflecting her agency in making choices for herself
Shiddat presents a romanticized portrayal of male persistence and female sacrifice, echoing some conventional gender norms often seen in Bollywood. Jaggi’s relentless pursuit of Kartika is celebrated as “true love,” but it raises questions about boundaries and respect in relationships
