Punctuation & Capital Letters in English

Punctuation & Capital Letters in English ✍️

Punctuation marks play a very important role in writing in English. Think of punctuation marks as the road signs of writing. Without them, words would be like cars crashing into each other.

Capital Letters, on the other hand, act like name tags — they show what’s important in a sentence.

Let's know about them:

🔹 Punctuation Marks

1. Full Stop (.)

  • Marks the end of a complete thought or statement.

  • Example: She is a good singer.

👉 Without it: She is a good singer she sings every day (confusing!)

2. Comma (,)

  • Used for small pauses.

  • Separates items in a list.

  • Also used in dates, addresses, or after introductory words.

  • Example: We visited Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.

3. Question Mark (?)

  • Used when asking something directly.

  • Example: Are you ready for the exam?

👉 Don’t use it after indirect questions:
She asked me where are you going?
She asked me where I was going.

4. Exclamation Mark (!)

  • Shows excitement, surprise, anger, or strong feelings.

  • Example: What a beautiful sunset!

5. Colon (:)

  • Introduces lists, explanations, or direct speech.

  • Example: He brought: pens, pencils, and a notebook.

6. Semicolon (;)

  • Links two related sentences without using and/but.

  • Example: I have a meeting tomorrow; I must prepare today.

7. Apostrophe (’)

  • Shows possession: Ramesh’s car (the car of Ramesh).

  • Shows contraction: can’t = cannot, it’s = it is.

👉 Be careful:

  • its (belonging to it)

  • it’s (it is)

8. Quotation Marks (“ ”)

  • Show direct speech or quotations.

  • Example: She said, “I am happy.”

9. Dash (—)

  • Adds sudden or extra information.

  • Example: I was late — but still managed to catch the train.

10. Hyphen (-)

  • Joins two or more words into one.

  • Example: mother-in-law, well-known, twenty-five.

11. Parentheses ( )

  • Add extra details that are not part of the main sentence.

  • Example: My brother (who lives in Chennai) is visiting us.

12. Ellipsis (…)

  • Shows omission, pause, or trailing thought.

  • Example: I was going to say something… but never mind.

----

🔹 Capital Letters: When to Use

    1. Beginning of a Sentence

    • Always capitalize the first word of a new sentence
    • Example: The teacher is kind.

   2. Names of People and Places (Proper Nouns)

  • Capitalize names of people, cities, countries, rivers, mountains, etc.

  • Example: Ashok, Priya, India, Hyderabad, Mount Everest, Ganga River.

3. Days, Months, and Holidays

  • The names of days, months, and special holidays always begin with a capital letter.

  • Example: Monday, January, Diwali, Christmas.

  • ❌ Don’t capitalize seasons like summer, winter, unless they are part of a proper noun (Winter Olympics).

4. The Pronoun “I”

  • Unlike other pronouns, “I” is always capitalized wherever it appears.

  • Example: My friend and I went shopping.

5. Titles of Books, Movies, and Works of Art

  • Important words in titles are capitalized (first and last words, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs).

  • Example: The Godfather, To Kill a Mockingbird, Mona Lisa.

  • Articles (a, an, the), prepositions (in, on, at), and conjunctions (and, but, or) are usually lowercase unless they are the first or last word.

6. Important Abbreviations and Acronyms

  • Abbreviations and acronyms are always written in capital letters.

  • Example: NASA, WHO, UN, USA, UK, HIV.

7. First Word in Direct Speech

  • When quoting someone, the first word of the spoken sentence is capitalized.

  • Example: She said, “I love learning English.”

8. Historical Periods, Events, and Documents

  • Capitalize names of eras, events, and famous documents.

  • Example: World War II, Renaissance, the Constitution, Independence Day.

9. Names of Institutions, Organizations, and Brands

  • Capitalize official names of companies, schools, universities, and brands.

  • Example: Microsoft, VNR VJIET, Oxford University, Coca-Cola.

For example, if a 16-year-old girl is forced into marriage, the law allows officials to stop the marriage and punish those involved. This Act helps protect children’s rights and ensures they are not deprived of their education and childhood.
